- In a bowl, marinate the fish with 1/3 tsp turmeric powder and 1/3 tsp salt.
- Peel the raw bananas. Cut in half. Now make four pieces longitudinally. You will get 8 pieces from each banana.
- Heat the oil in a wok. Add in the bananas, and sauté till golden on the outside. Remove.
- Now add the fish, and fry for 3-4 minutes. Each piece should be golden in colour on both sides. Remove.
- To the oil, add the nigella seeds. Let them splutter.
- Carefully add in the fish and the banana.
- Pour in the water. Immediately add turmeric, salt, pepper, cumin powder, and green chillies.
- Bring to a boil. Then reduce the flame to low.
- Cover the wok. Let the fish cook for 4-5 minutes.
- Open. Turn the pieces around. Adjust seasoning.
- Cook for another 1-2 minutes on low flame.
- Serve hot, with rice.
You can make this recipe with any kind of fish that you like. I have made it with the lady fish that is pretty popular here. How to Make Magur Macher Jhol. In another pan, pour the remaining oil and put cardamom, clove, cinnamon and two bay leaves along with cumin. A very light Bengali fish curry, that doesn't call for onion or tomato.
