  1. Prepare 200 gm Split black urad
  2. Get 3 parts of water atleast (Dhal:water ratio)

  11. Get 3/4 th cup of whole milk

  14. Get 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  15. Get 1 green chilli finely chopped
  16. Take 1 pinch sugar
  17. Get A few coriander leaves and onion slices to garnish

Instructions to make Kaali Dhal/black Urad dal:
  1. Pressure cook the dhal along with grated garlic, grated ginger, finely chopped onions, a pinch of hing, kashmiri chilli powder & turmeric powder for 20-25 minutes till soft. If you do not have a pressure cooker, I would suggest soaking the split lentils for about 30 mins atleast and cooking them directly on a pot on medium flame. If you are using the whole black lentil, then please soak for 6-8 hours.
  2. Once the dhal has cooked to a nice soft texture, allow it to slow cook further in low flame. In another pan, do a tempering with ghee or oil. To hot oil or ghee, add cumin seeds, green chilli and add this to the simmering pot of dhal. Add required salt, sugar and garam masala at this stage.
  3. Give it all a good mix and allow it cook for a another 5 minutes and then add whole milk. Mix well and cook for 3 more minutes till you start to see a nice creamy consistency.
  4. Turn off flame and garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve with sliced onions.
