Afang and Ukazi soup prepared in the eastern part of Nigeria are quite different. Though the leaves are the same, afang soup is made with vegetables, while Ukazi soup is Melon soup with slices of ukazi leaves in it. The leaves can be used as a remedy for nausea, sore throats, or as a dressing for warts. "Afang soup" is the name given to this delicious dish by the Efiks and Ibibios, "Okazi soup" is what the Igbos call it in Nigeria, however, Cameronians call it "Eru" while the Congo people call it. It is known as Miyan Gushi in Hausa, Ofe Egusi in Igbo and Efo Elegusi in Yoruba.

Instructions to make Afang Melon 😁:
  1. Wash assorted, meat, bone marrow and fish and stock fish with hot water and season them excluding the fish with onion, pepper, seasoning cube till done, seperate stock from proteins.
  2. Blend melon and soak in a little water, add onions mix it and set aside. Put palm oil in a pot and when hot add diced onions, stir fry and then add tomatoes, and fry them properly then add the melon, fry them for about 7mins then add meat stock, cover pot and reduce heat, allow to boil then stir at intervals for another 5minutea then add the whole boiled meat except the bones, fish, perewinkles, crayfish and a little seasoning then stir, allow to cook a bit while you wash the afang leaves.
  3. Pound the leaves a bit just to cut the length and then add it, stir and turn off heat…. Serve with preferred swallow
