The ingredients needed to make Sambhar rice:
  1. Get for masala powder:
  2. Get 2 spoons urad dal
  3. Get 2 spoons chanadal
  4. Prepare 1 spoon dhaniya powder
  5. Make ready 2 cloves
  6. Prepare 1 inch cinnamon
  7. Take 2 cardamom pods
  8. Take 1 marathi moggu
  9. Make ready 5 red chillies (adjust according to spice)

  13. Get 1 spoon Tamarind paste

  18. Make ready 1/2 cup toor dal
  19. Take 1 spoon Moong Dal
  20. Prepare 6 cups water
  21. Take 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds

  24. Take as required Carrot, beans, potato, chayote, green peas, Drumstick

While we have used only toovar dal in this sambhar rice recipe, you can mix together other dal like moong dal to make it more nutritious. Sambhar Rice is one of the most common and delicious one-pot meal in any south-Indian household. In many parts of south India it is also referred as Kadamba sadam. Kadamba, meaning mixed and sadam meaning rice.

Steps to make Sambhar rice:
  1. Add the ingredients of the masala powder except dry coconut into a pan and roast it until golden colour with a spoon of oil. In a mixer jar first grind dry coconut and then add the roasted ingredients and grind it to a fine powder.
  2. Wash and Cut all the veggies as shown in the pic. Into a pressure cooker add in oil and mustard seeds and let it splutter. Now add in the sliced onions, curry leaves and sauté.
  3. Add in all the veggies, tomatoes and green peas and fry for 2 minutes. Add in the Tamarind paste and sauté.
  4. Add in the masala powder and mix well. Now add in the washed rice and dal to it and add required amount of salt. Add the water and a spoon of ghee and pressure cook it for 2 whistles.
  5. Allow the pressure to release and mix it up. Serve it hot with Aloo chips and Kara Boondi or Appalam.
