In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

To get started with this particular recipe, we must first prepare a few ingredients. You can cook irish soda bread using 5 ingredients and 6 steps. Here is how you can achieve it.

The ingredients needed to make Irish Soda Bread:
  1. Get 300 g plain flour
  2. Take 300 g wholemeal flour
  3. Prepare 2 tsp salt
  4. Prepare 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  5. Make ready 600 ml buttermilk

You can bake it in a cast iron frying pan (now that's traditional!) or an a regular baking sheet. It's much faster than most other bread recipes, because it does not contain any yeast. Soda bread is leavened with just baking soda, so you don't have to wait a long time for it to rise. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Steps to make Irish Soda Bread:
  1. Preheat the oven to 220 C.
  2. Mix all of the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add the buttermilk in slowly. Mix initially with a spoon and use your hands when it becomes too tough.

Move the formed dough to a floured surface. The books I've read say that you shouldn't handle these doughs too much, so just kneed just enough to bring it together into a nice sphere, and place on some baking paper. I use a pizza stone for all bread-like foods.

  1. Flatten the dough and scour deeply with a serrated knife.
  2. Bake at 220 for about 15 mins. Then drop the temperature to 200 and cook for 20-25 mins.
  3. Let cool before digging in. This is beautiful warm, with lavish coatings of butter, and dipped into soup! :)

There are options for the baking pan. This makes a fairly dense, rustic (ugly, even) loaf of bread that is tasty and not sweet. It is crusty and rough on the outside, chewy inside. Nummy hot with lots of butter! Tip the flours, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl and stir.
