Idli or idly (pronunciation (help · info)) (/ ɪ d l iː /) are a type of savoury rice cake, originating from the Indian subcontinent, popular as breakfast foods in Southern India and among Tamils in Sri Lanka. The cakes are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils (de-husked) and rice. The fermentation process breaks down the starches so that they are more readily.

Idli is one of the most well liked of recent trending foods in the world. It is easy, it’s quick, it tastes yummy. It’s enjoyed by millions daily. They’re nice and they look fantastic. Idli is something that I’ve loved my entire life.

The ingredients needed to make Idli:
  1. Make ready 1/2 cup Urad dal
  2. Take 2.5 cup Idli rice/White rice
  3. Prepare to taste Salt
  4. Take Poha (optional) (1/4 cup)

  6. Make ready Dry yeast (needed in cold country)

  11. Take Set the grinded/blended smooth batter aside in warm place
  12. Make ready Let it ferment and rise for 8 to 14 hours(depending the weather)

  14. Make ready On a high flame, bring water to boil in an idli steamer pot
  15. Make ready Mix the idli batter gently
  16. Prepare Pour into the batter into greased tray
  17. Get Cover the pot with lid
  18. Make ready Let the idly steam for 10 minutes
  19. Take Once done, Remove the idly trays
  20. Prepare Let it cool down for 1 minutes
  21. Prepare With a help of a spoon remove idli from the tray

Although it is traditionally a South Indian snack, it has now become extremely popular all over the country - and with good reason too. Idli is a steamed food, made with with a fermented batter of rice, urad dal and fenugreek seeds. White and fluffy, it is a delight to bite into. Both idli and dosa batter are made from rice and lentils.

Steps to make Idli:
  1. Soak & Grind urad dal & rice into a smooth batter
  2. Ferment for 8 to 14 hours. Let it rise. Steam idlis. (8 minutes per tray), (i used steamer sheets)
  3. Idli can be served with any curry or chutney

Idli batter is more thick in consistency than a dosa batter. To make dosa, the batter is spread on the tava (griddle) and thus needs to have a slight flowing and spreadable consistency. Traditionally, idli is prepared using soaked basmati rice, urad dal and fenugreek seeds. However, these days you can easily find idlis made of semolina, which is a little difficult to digest. Here's an easy recipe of plain-old idli which requires very basic ingredients and can be prepared very easily. *In a skillet, add ghee, mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, onion and ginger garlic paste.
